Thanda After-School Project
Thanda After-School works with
children to target the underlying
causes of poverty and HIV/AIDS
within their communities
Thanda After-School empowers 320 students,
K-12, through lessons, skills, and activities after-school.
Our goal is to find long-term solutions to issues the students face,
with a focus on unemployment, poverty, and HIV/AIDS.
Thanda After-School is a new method of orphan care, HIV prevention, and poverty alleviation that focuses on long-term changes rather than hand-outs or band-aid solutions. Although a permanent project, Thanda After-School is also a pilot for this model to develop a structure and curriculum that can be replicated in other schools in South Africa. Thanda After-School is a support structure for vulnerable children, providing basic care and empowering students to make long-term changes. Thanda After-School uses already-existing structures to provide activities, lessons, and skills development after-school. Thanda is a community-based organization that focuses on local capacity building, utilizing graduated students from the community as role models, coaches, and teachers.

Thanda After-School is based in rural Umtwalume, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The students in the program come from a local children's home and 3 local government schools. The Thanda After-School Project started in February 2008 and runs 5 days a week for 320 students each day. Please visit the Programs Page for more information.
