FOCUS ON MATRIC (FOM) started this year in a different way. We started FOM two weeks after school opened. Our students were very interested in starting this program with us (Thanda teachers), and their interest in this program clearly shows that they realize how important it is to matriculate in this country and how helpful it will be in the future. Some of the parents we meet tell us that their kids, our students, are truly excited to be in FOM. This is also shown by their amazing attendance. They come everyday, sometimes even on weekends.
We spend two hours a day with the students studying, sharing ideas and, in some cases, helping students with their home situations. Last year the FOM program was only focusing on academics but this year we have included all the above-mentioned things. The areas of study included MATHEMATICS, PHYSICAL SCIENCES, LIFE SCIENCES, GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY, BUSINESS STUDIES, ACCOUNTING and ECONOMICS. This year we expanded with AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES and MATHEMATIC LITERACY. Students in this program are divided into three groups according to the subjects they are doing.

In the 1st term we were focusing mostly on academics. In this term, we are still going to do academics, but we are also going to look at how the students can change their lives in different ways. For instance, how they can reduce the high rate of poverty in their community and the benefits of the following qualities: respect, honesty, self-discipline, perseverance and determination.
In the third term we will have an awareness week about HIV/AIDS. Here we will be telling the students about the importance of keeping themselves HIV/AIDS free and how to prevent themselves from getting HIV/AIDS. After that awareness week we will start reviewing the work of the whole year because, by that time, the final exams will be around the corner.
Our main objective this year is to get our students prepared and accepted to study in universities. This will only happen if they get good scores in their final results. We also want to help our student start their own businesses in their communities, but only if they are interested in that. We do not tell them what to do but we help them with what they want to do. This will be a good year for this program.
We ensure that this will happen by devoting our time to our students, we are their teachers twenty-four hours a day.
