The Thanda Netball Program meets four days a week on the lower fields and enrolls 24 girls from Khathi High School. The program gives the girls a safe space to engage in athletic activity and discuss issues that affect them in their community, such as HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy.

Since last year the netball program has improved very much. Last year the girls did not take their schoolwork seriously; they always thought the team was only about playing netball. This year everything is different and I did motivations with the girls to help them understand better. The English binder which Thanda created for the students really helps a lot because the kids receive activities which help them to practice their English skills when they have finished their homework. During homework sessions, we spend most of the time working on homework activities. I do these activities together with the students by going from one kid to the next until they all finish. This helps them because I don’t give them answers, but I give them guidance and let them come up with answers on their own. During netball days, they learn netball skills. In Term 1 we did passing, defending and shooting skills. They also learned to participate in drills. We discussed the values of Thanda in the classroom and in real life such as determination and respect. In Term 2, the kids will learn ball controlling, playing positions, footwork, showing sportsmanship, understanding of the causes & consequences of crime in the community, understanding personal responsibility & potential role in the community, basic entrepreneurship skills and math foundations. In Term 3, we will do techniques to help shooting action like the 1-2-3 shoot technique. Students learn to control the game, and students also get the opportunity to teach netball to others who don’t understand. They will also get information on healthy living topics and understanding them. In Term 4, we will review what happened in Terms 1 through 3. Students motivate each other through what they’ve experienced, providing constructive feed back to team mates, self-awareness, and more mathematics and English skills.
