Agriculture

Thanda’s Agriculture program teaches practical skills to students and the community with the goal of creating fresh and sustainable local food supplies. Our courses combine classroom theory with functional training using Thanda’s own vegetable garden. We like to focus on new, exciting areas of agriculture, such as permaculture and organic farming, while making sure participants are familiar with gardening basics, like which seasons are best to grow certain foods and when prime harvesting times take place.

At Thanda, we believe that a hands-on approach to agriculture is the best way to get vulnerable children to acquire knowledge of this demanding vocation and share it with their families, friends, and fellow community members. So, as important as the theory side of the program is, it is the time spent in Thanda’s training garden that is most beneficial. All students are given their own plots of land in which they grown their own vegetables. Thanda’s agricultural techniques do not require the use of any chemicals or store-bought tools, and we use minimal amounts of water. This practical component of the program allows students to develop the skills they need to grow healthy foods and teaches them the responsibility that is required for successful cultivation.

The children in Thanda’s Agriculture program are given a nutritious meal each day and receive help with their homework as well. The Agriculture teacher serves as a role model to his students, using his programs to teach them important life skills that help them deal with the issues they face today and prepare for the futures they dream of tomorrow.
